Focusing on your business when there are so many distractions

It can be tough keeping up the focus on your business when there are so many distractions in front of you.  Family, health and of course your business can suffer with the noise going on around you, especially in these current times.

When times are tough and there is so much going on. Stop, Reset and Focus.

1.  Focus on your breathing and relax

Take some time out in your day to focus on yourself. Deep breathing can help you calm down, relax and focus.

  • You need to find a comfortable place where you will not be disturbed even if this is for 5-10 mins. It is better than not stopping at all.
  • Concentrate on your breathing- There are some great apps to help you achieve this. An app you can use is on your Apple watch and it is called Breathe.

2.  Focus on why you went into business

Once you have mastered deep breathing and relaxing in short spurts then set aside  extra time to allow you to focus on your business. Grab a notebook and pen as well and start asking yourself the following questions.

  • What was the initial driver for you to start your business?- Did you go into business because you had an idea, was it a family business or was it your dream. It may have been you were already working in that field and wanted to be your own boss. If it was a family business did you go into it by choice or were you expected to go into that business.
  • What were the services/products that you were selling and what are you selling now?- Think about the evolving business if it has been around a long time then you would have seen many changes. If your business is fairly new then you may still have the same products/services from when you opened.
  • What has changed in your business?- There can be different reasons for the change to your business such as Expansion, Employing staff or New products/services or even technology. Technology has definitely changed the business landscape. Have you embraced tech or stayed away from it?
  • If there has been no change then why? Change can be the way you run your business. You need to ask yourself is the way you are running your business now the only way?

3. Focus on your goals that you set for your business?

Business goals are what is the business’s purpose in a fixed timeline Eg: weekly, monthly, yearly. This is where you want your business to go.

When you opened your business you would have set goals and you would have had visions for your business. As time has passed you may have lost your focus on what they were or you have never changed them and moved on.

  • Start thinking about what you want and are able to do in your business. These may be completely different to what you are doing now. Eg: Maintain Profit, Community Outreach, Double growth of business etc
  • Write them down- In your notepad draw a line in the middle of the paper. Put a heading ’Goals’ on left hand side and the other side ‘Review of goals’
  • Start listing your goals and then review them. This can be broken down into weekly, monthly or yearly as you should have different goals for each. By examining each goal it will give you a sense of what it is you wanted to achieve and how well it went or what you need to do to achieve that goal

4. Focus on the objectives that you set for the business?

Business objectives are how your business is going to achieve your business goals.  These usually go hand in hand.

  • Review the goals that you wrote down for your business in item 3. Then write down how you are going to achieve them. Do you have to buy new machinery, develop a new skill, research a new product?
  • It is best to list each goal on a separate sheet and underneath list all the actions that need to be taken to achieve this goal.
  • After you have set your goals and objectives then add the timelines that you want to achieve this.
  • Once that timeline is complete, review each goal and objective and write down what worked and what didn’t work. Then if you need to set a  new objective if there has been a change upon review then you can implement this into a new timeline.

5. Focus on what your vision for your business is

A vision statement is a statement that you make based on your goals. It helps to keep you focused on what the essence of your business and purpose is.  A vision statement should be constantly revisited to measure your progress and success. It is a live document like your business plan. The statement represents the heart and soul of your business and It can also help you make key business decisions.

  • Now write down your Vision statement and ask yourself if this represents your business goals at this point in time- If not then review, rewrite and rewrite again a statement that best represents your business until you are happy with it.
  • Your vision can also help create your unique selling proposition(USP). The USP is the marketing statement you use to sell your product and services. This is the reason why your customers/clients come to you to do business and not someone else.
  • The statement can be included in documents and a code of conduct can be developed around this.
  • Your vision statement can also be included in staff performance reviews as this can be a basis on some points of evaluation in the review process. It is there to give everyone inspiration and remind them of their purpose.
  • Post your Vision statement on your website, your office, and use it in marketing material.

By taking the time to focus on your why, your goals and vision of your business you are giving yourself a chance to have that light bulb moment of what it is that you can do next. It is taking you back to the business and maybe reinventing it.

Never limit yourself. Believe that anything is possible with the right dedication and focus. By making your business nimble and open to change in these challenging times you never know where it will take you.
